what causes mental problems?
« on: September 25, 2013, 05:08:22 pm »
I have been suffering lately with ADHD, hyperactivity and basically general sense of craziness. I get racing thoughts all the time. I limit carb consumption and although I do not consume raw paleo, I do eat a paleo diet.

Could it be lack of sunlight and serotinin production?

Try eating "high-meat" as that boosts mental alertness etc.

You might be getting too much protein and not enough fat.  Also, calcium and magnesium, taken together, are very effective in calming your mind.

I'm also ADHD, though not physically hyperactive, my mind is often going and racy. Biggest things to help me were:

-switching from cooked to raw meat. Within 1 week I cut my Adderall dosage in half just from this. Part of it was going from grain-fed to grass-fed I'm sure but also simply it was more utilized by my body in the raw state. Same for veggies and fruits. Whenever I ate them cooked, I needed more Adderall to get through the day. Raw state, less Adderall.

-Consuming enough fat. This helped two ways; I was satiated so I could choose to eat less and that would keep my mind more clear, and it helped me cut down my carb consumption, which seems to make my thoughts race more and then also have me crash out more often. BG spikes were not my friend.

-The iodine protocol has been my biggest non-paleo ally. Not prescribing it to you saying it will work, I'm just saying, it helped clear my mind and that it is beneficial. My brother who is also ADHD seems to enjoy iodine a lot too.

-High meat is sometimes more effective than anything. Instant boost in energy, clarity, focus, mood, etc.

My "suggestions" if they aren't already being done:

- check the quality of your meat. If you are cooking your meat I'll partially assume that you aren't terribly concerned about it being 100% grass-fed? It can be hidden more easily with cooked meat.

-Go to bed on time and wake up early. I always feel better this way and it seems to be universal for any mental issues. If you are having trouble getting to sleep on time do these things: get f.lux for you computer or twilight for your phone, they take out blue light which has a tendency to keep you awake, if you're ever around the computer at night. Switch to candle light after sunset. Actually be in bed even if you aren't tired and listen to sleep meditations or hypnosis tracks on youtube. Those have put me out in 20 min even if I was wide awake and it was an hour before I was used to going to bed.

-try an "elimination" approach. There may be something you are consuming that is within paleo standards but is not good for YOU. For example, I found out this summer I can't eat apricots. Even one made my mouth taste bad and made me tired. However, here in the fall I'm okay with apples. Just gotta see what works for you.
-Dustin

Trying to heal ADHD. Common symptoms: fatigue, impulsiveness, poor attention, no motivation.
Other side issues I'd like to get over: Acne, dandruff, tooth health (yellow, poor gums, gingivitis)

If ya ain't hungry enough to eat raw liver, ya ain't hungry enough.

We are all just doing the best we can, with what we know, at any given time.

Heavy metal toxicity is quite linked to psychosis type mental illness.

I also find that the mroe fat Ie at the calmer my mind is. Fruit makes my mind start racing more. Raw honey does not have this effect.

We Want to Live page 290:

MENTAL ILLNESS is a condition in which a person has tremendous
difficulty dealing “rationally” with problems and stress. Although the
problems may be normal, the emotionally challenged individual is
overwhelmed by them. Some people react antisocially. That usually
occurs in very sensitive, overly criticized individuals who are in constant
fear of making disastrous decisions. I have found that the resultant stress
overtaxes the nervous and glandular systems. Neural and glandular
irritation and exhaustion result in actual physiological imbalances, such
as: hypoglycemia, diabetes, thinning of neural membranes, and thyroid
malfunction. Unless physical health is restored, psychotherapy of any
kind is not likely to be complete or long-lasting.
Eating a raw diet that includes some cooked starch with plenty of raw fat and some raw unripe fruit 1-2 times daily helps balance hormonal
levels. Eating plenty of raw fat, including no-salt-added raw cheese and
raw cream (when available), and meat, especially fish, gradually
restores health to glands and nerves.
A fun deficiency is also the cause. If you are not having enough fun
you are probably criticizing yourself and others. Be a cheerleader for
yourself. Trust and encourage yourself and others in whatever is right
for each of you as individuals. Although education and science try to
formulate everything and everybody, no two people will ever think or
act alike, or have the same tastes. Just as two flowers on the same stem
are different, both are beautiful and right. Only machines that have no
choice follow formulas. If you try to validate yourself by comparing
yourself to other people’s thinking and talents, you will always be
confused and insecure. When you have a taste (a need) for strawberries
and someone else has a taste (a need) for oranges, each of you is right
for yourself.
Listening to one’s self, discovering one’s likes and dislikes, and
trusting one’s choices based on those likes and dislikes are important to
liking yourself. Finding an appealing creative outlet, not comparing
one’s creativity to anyone else’s, and pursuing that creative outlet help
build self-esteem. See Depression, page 254, and Awareness, page 325.
See the book The Recipe For Living Without Disease, Chapters 12 and 15.

page 254

DEPRESSION:  Transient depression is most often caused by low
blood sugar. Drinking a blenderized mixture of ½ cup of raw fresh fruit
(such as orange, or pineapple, or whatever fruit appeals to you) and ½
cup unheated honey usually brings immediate relief. Drinking a little
and then sipping the rest over a 1-to-2-hour period often creates better
results. If hypoglycemia or diabetes is involved, 1-3 ounces raw cream
or ½-1 avocado or other raw fat (e.g., raw coconut cream, unsalted raw
cheese) should be blended in or eaten with the fruit and honey mixture.
To handle repeated and extended spells of depression, see Appendix H,
page 138, and Appendix L, page 141.
Chronic depression is most often caused by low bacterial levels in
the digestive tract and/or protein deficiencies. Eating at least 1 pound
of raw meat and ½ cup raw cream daily helps ease chronic depression.
To completely resolve it, I suggest eating “high” meat. (See the book
The Recipe For Living Without Disease, High Meat, Chapter 15.
Doing something creative inspires creative thinking for problem
solving instead of worrying. Concentrating on creating positive things
and experiences helps create a better future. Then making choices
based on yourself experiencing a more suitable future makes your
future a better reality. Believing in sayings like "too good to be true"
closes the door to wonderful experience. Inventions are rarely made by
proving something can't be done. Inventions are made by focusing on
the possibilities that something can be done. If I had believed what the
doctors said about my probabilities, I would be dead. If I had listened
to what most of my teachers and counselors told me my aptitudes were,
I would not have been able to read a book, much less write this one.
What will you invent or create of your future? For suggestions on
creating happiness, see Awareness, page 325, and Mental illness, page
290.

page 325

AWARENESS: Asking yourself questions about your individual needs
and what you enjoy, leads to answers that promote happiness and self-
esteem. Listening to your body’s needs and enjoyments are part of that
questioning. Instead of dwelling on all the possible things that could go
wrong, or that already have gone "wrong", living in the moment and choosing which dreams you wish to follow give you power to create a
more desirable future. Imagining the worst things that can happen, so
that you will be ready and prepared just in case they happen, creates
tension, criticism and cynicism. It is useless to waste time considering
infinite negative possibilities. It is helpful to consider negative
probabilities but it is futile and debilitating to dwell on negative
probabilities and possibilities. If negative probabilities exist, make the
best plans of action to change those directions. Tension and
criticism/cynicism attract tense, cynical, critical people and
experiences; a stressful and exhausting cycle. Are you as prepared for
the best possibilities? Preparing for the best experiences creates hope
and joy. Hope and joy attract happier, creative people and experiences
to you, and synchronicity; a delightful cycle. Therefore, imagining and
fantasizing positive experiences with the belief that they are probable
creates a happier and more fulfilling life. If you quit, whose life do you
surrender? Ecological considerations and compassion create healthier
environments, and consequently healthier and happier people.

There are soo many factors involved in mental illness. But here are a few that could help.

Magnesium

Magnesium promotes a relaxed state which is very helpful. It's important to balance calcium and magnesium, you want about a 1:1 ratio of each.

Omega's 3 & 6

You want to balance your omega 3's and 6's. An imbalance can lead to irritability and aggressiveness which can worsen symptoms. So lots of grass fed meats, grass fed animal fats, and wild caught ocean fish. You'd want to moderate consumption of fatty plant foods since their omega 3:6 balance is off.

Heavy metals

Excess copper, aluminum, etc can be a problem. Ways to balance those involves using certain minerals that lowers their levels. Ie taking zinc lowers copper levels. There's some good info on the Weston Price website

Gluten and Casein

It's probably best to eliminate gluten and casein. I've seen a lot linking them to mental health problems.

Orthomolecular Therapy

Orthomolecular therapy has been very effective for me. Combined with RPD it's been even better. Dr. Hoffer has lots of info online, he even has a journal filled with nutritional info on treating mental illness.
Disclaimer: I was told I was misdiagnosed over 10 years ago, and I haven't taken any medication in over a decade.

In anthroposophic medicine and in waldorf education, the first aid to ADHD is to STOP watching television / movies / video games.  If you must use computers, minimize them and stop using wifi and cell phones... electromagnetic pollution.

Go take a vacation electronic free to the beach or the mountains, go camping in nature for a few days or more, see how that benefits you.

Plus have a sane RPD plan that works for you.

To stop watching tv/movirs/video games and to stop surfing the net is probably the healthiest thing one can do for their mental health. Quitting those things many years ago is the greatest thing iv ever done along with raw foods and I never went back. I was off the computer for a while and that was like taking it to the next level, felt very good after that as well, im hopefully getting rid of my computer again soon as it made me feel so much more sane. Mind control music is also very important to get away from to maintain sanity

here is a video describing the mechanics of how the television infects ones mind.
this clip explains the science of music and how it is used to control the mind scientifically. Television is the same. You cant let this stuff in your head or it will affect you negatively. This is a mahor cause of todays insanity.

In many cases its a lack of oxygen somewhere in the body (mostly the brain) that is the cause of mental problems.

Re: heavy metals I run my RifeMedic 5 on them probably twice a year. There is a much cheaper alternative available from China for sub 100 USD

Sunlight and to increase it's power I would suggest sungazing @ solarhealing.com

Some technological choices are Neurofeedback devices and programs such as Neuroptimal by Zengar and Smartbraintech.com

I am waiting for my Heartmath Emwave desktop to arrive as I type. There are three versions available. Mine ties you to the computer, but gives you more options to work on, while the other two are portable.

Basically you attach a heart monitor to your ear lobe (simple clip) and it reads your heart beats. Then it suggests a breathing rate which is easy to follow as it graphically shows it. Then it notices when you start to think negative thoughts or get upset although it may be only on a subtle level and shows you how to stop it. This is all realtime, so you immediately get feedback and see exactly what triggers and then how to stop the process with different thoughts and breathing techniques. Green is good while red is not good.

I have read many ppl who say that it is a big help for depression but also for ppl who would not classify themselves as depressed, because it teaches you how to 'say no to stress' and recognize it instantly, which is of course the solution. Once you have conquered it you will notice less fatigue which basically is cumulative. I will post on it when i have had a chance to check it out.

+1 Lack of blood pressure which is caused by lack of dopamine and lack of dopamine is caused by technology addiction. So what goodsamaritan said.
