Debunking the paleo diet: Christina Warinner at TEDxOU

To summarize - paleolithic people may have ate a lot of plant foods from various neolithic type foods (beans, grains) and a lot less animal foods. A lot of today's commercially available foods (bananas, avocados, blueberries, etc.) are nothing like their wild, non hybridized counterparts. Certain parts of paleo diet are good practices - whole foods, unprocessed foods, etc.

What I found most interesting was how so many of today's commercially available foods are nothing like the wild version.

No humans were eating grains or beans 150K or 200K years ago.  Probably nobody was eating them in any significant amounts even 10K years ago.  Grain consumption only really ramped up around 5000 years ago, and many human groups only started eating them much more recently.  North American Indians only started eating corn/beans around 1000 years ago.

1000 or even 5000 years is not NEARLY long enough to become really adapted to completely new foods that are VERY different from the normal diet.

"Debunk", indeed.

I wouldn't say I agree with all her views. Just sharing an interesting talk. Most interesting to me was that commercial foods are really different from their wild alternative.

We already knew that !
Cause and effect are distant in time and space in complex systems, while at the same time there’s a tendency to look for causes near the events sought to be explained. Time delays in feedback in systems result in the condition where the long-run response of a system to an action is often different from its short-run response. — Ronald J. Ziegler

Great talk! Nothing particularly new though.

She did not debunk anything.
Someone should comment that if she were still doing her research she should scoot on over to our forum and pour over our discussions.
