Weird Reaction?
« on: May 11, 2014, 10:17:37 am »
I'm having a weird reaction right now. I had chicken thigh, then maybe 20 min later I ate a banana that was nearly gone bad. Very brown in some spots, and I only ate the non-brown parts. I hate waste, but it was too far gone to eat without gagging. Then, I had a manila mango. All was fine while I was eating the mango, but as soon as I had finished and thrown the peel away, the left side of my mouth got a harsh prickling and burning sensation. It's like little prickling/stabbing and it burns inside my right cheek, along the side of my tongue, and my entire throat.

It's really weird. This is far from my first time eating either of these three items. Is this an allergic reaction though? Unless there was some cross contamination, but even then I have no idea what could've happened.

Note: I almost always eat with my hands, so I touched all of these things quite a bit and I'm not experiencing any reactions on my skin. My lips are fine too.

The mango is the most allergenic of those by far, and that sounds like a typical mango reaction.  Try eating mango right after chicken one day, and see if it still happens.  Then try eating it right after banana, and see if it happens then, too.

I've had a couple of mangos since originally posting this, and no reactions. I really have no idea what it was.

Mango has the same chemical in its peel as poison oak I am pretty sure. I am super allergic to mango, it shreds my lips and makes me feel like death.

That's no fun. I remember I was with my family out somewhere, and we all wandered through a ton of poison ivy. It was up to our waist, and it wasn't until someone started getting itchy that we realized what it was. I was the only one in the entire group (10+ people) that had no reaction whatsoever.

I had that same reaction once when I ate an adrenal gland. It also gave me stomach pain for 2.5 hours. I never had an issue with adrenals after that, just that one. very strange.

fyi, cashews and pistachios contain the poison ivy toxin urushiol. raw cashews are never raw, they must be steamed by law to break down most of the toxin
My basic health philosophy:

1. If it is advertized on TV, don't touch it.
2. If it is recommended in the news, do the opposite.
3. If it makes most people afraid, it might be good for you.

Ew, good to know. I've always liked cashews, but haven't had them in ages. I assumed almonds were the only "raw" nuts under that law.

Mango is in the same evergreen tree family that includes pistachio, cashew, and poison ivy. Mangoes also contain urushiol, though it is concentrated in the skin.

There are also other allergens in mangoes:
Quote
Mango contains a number of different allergens which are found in many other foods besides pistachio and cashew. For example, there is a fruit profilin in mango which is also found in pear, peach, and apple. There is a panallergen found in celery, carrot, apple, peanut, paprika, anise, fennel, coriander, and cumin that demonstrates cross-reactivity with mango. Mango has also demonstrated cross-reactivity to foods in the "latex-fruit cross-reactivity syndrome." A chitinase-like protein cross-reacting with latex has been found in mango as well as avocado, chestnut, banana, kiwi, tomato, passion fruit, and papaya. http://www.aaaai.org/ask-the-expert/mango-cross-reactivity-cashew-pistachio.aspx
