Splendid post. Michael Pollan wrote a piece for the New Yorker some months back along the same lines: The Intelligent Plant. Amazing stuff!

Vegetarians and vegans have long brandished ethical arguments against eating animals due to the animals' sentience. It appears to me that science is moving swiftly down a path that will acknowledge that plants are every bit as sentient as animals, they just express that sentience in very different ways.
